8:00 pm
>> gary: we welcome you back and it is brought to you by our friends at radio shack. what do you know? the third base coach for the orioles. he has gone back to philadelphia. he was inducted into the phillies' hall of fame last year and this year he gets to present to thissier's entrant and it is harry kalas. his family will be there.
8:01 pm
he is going to be inducted into the phillies' hall of fame. so as a result -- >> buck: john shelby coaches third and he coaches first, and it is an opportunity to go back and enjoy the r the honor of being on the wall of the hall of fame. they're having a pretty good turn out with mike schmidt, lefty carlton, steve carlton coming back. >> gary: brian roberts for the o's. he flied out to left field his first time up. one ball and one strike count. toronto, 2-3-0. the orioles, o's. and that is taken up high for a ball. talking about the doubles' leaders, here is one of them. >> buck: and he hits doubles. he has great speed. he is a slashing hitter. he has always been among the
8:02 pm
league leaders in doubles. >> gary: followed by lend and markakis so the top three doubles hitters are in this game. >> buck: to me a double is even more of a pressure hit than a home run on a pitcher. auto home run goes out of the ballpark. the pitcher winds up. no big deal. the doubles keep the pressure on. he's got to look at that guy in scoring position behind him. >> gary: and brian is on. there is the first base runner for the orioles, a lead-off walk. 43 walks in 111 innings for ricky romero. >> buck: it is really interesting to hear your comments and i think a lot of it has to do about his delivery and he doesn't walk many and his pitch count stays reasonably in order. >> gary: he is impressive. the left-handers ironically, have hit him hard. >> buck: i'll give you the reason for that after this pitch. >> gary: jones up and will take it for a strike.
8:03 pm
>> buck: for some reason pitchers are reluctant to throw the changeup to left-handed batters. if you're a lefty, you don't throw it to left-handers, and i could never understand that. they feel it runs back into their power zone. but the sequence of pitches is that the changeup is about three feet shorter than your fastball and you're losing your effectiveness of that changeup. so i think it is important that the left-handers -- why eliminate your best pitch and that's why the left-handers are hitting them so well. he just doesn't throw it to them. >> dave: pretty distinct number. .300 compared to .254. that is a wide average left- handers to right-handers. jones grounded out his first time up. adam will take that one back down to the mound. romero has to get the first and guns it for the out. >> buck: he cost himself a double play there by not fielding the position. brian roberts ends up in scoring position that was a perfect double play ball acomebacker right to the mound.
8:04 pm
you're generally thinking of a 1-6-3 double play on that one. >> gary: so nick markakis will have a chance to put the orioles on the board with roberts on at second base. >> buck: in talking about lefty on lefty changeup, jimmy key, who is in the building, part of that world series team, 1992, 1993, could never get mow hahn out until he threw him changeups. it would be inside, if he did hit it, he would hit it nine miles foul. most of the time he was on the of it. >> gary: one strike -- one out with the runner at second base, and the delivery to markakis. he is taking for a strike. nick has moved ahead of adam jones for the orioles with the best numbers in running position by one point. markakis is hitting at .242. so only one point separates them. scutaro mooing in. the pick-off attempt. >> buck: obviously brian in this situation here early in his ballgame, the fourth inning, if he can get to third
8:05 pm
base, i doubt that cito gaston would pull the informed in. 11 times he has stolen third base this year. he has been caught zero. he gets great jumps, and he really reads the pitchers' head. >> gary: scutaro is not giving him room. boy, he took a big jump and doesn't go. barajas has then out 33% of base stealers. >> buck: watch the back of ricky romero's head that is what he tees awe of when he looks at home, romero. obviously he is going to see the back of the head, and then he will look back at the base runner. >> gary: one ball, one strike count? slightly inside. causing a minor irritation to the hitter. 2-1. >> buck: just minor irritation. up and in. you're trying to hang out to guard against that breaking ball and changeup, and markakis ducks out of the way. we've seen a good breaking ball from ricky romero, but remember the numbers gary talked about.
8:06 pm
left-handers hit him well. >> gary: markakis with a two ball, one strike count. roberts not too far off second. nick grounds that one. hill, and roberts will move up, but there are now two down. >> buck: you know, romero did a pretty good job of knocking down the timing of brian roberts. brian had him read a couple of times and romero held the ball and threw back on a pick-off attempt. brian never really could get the jump he needed. >> gary: so aubrey huff will try to bring that run home with two down aubrey with runners in scoring position, .316 on the year and a chopper foul at the plate, immediately called foul. for huff, when there have been two down, he has a .250 average with runners in scoring position, which is not bad. there are not many high numbers in these two-out situations.
8:07 pm
in fact, the orioles have been one of the teams to score some of the most runs with only one away. the runs have come with no outs or one out in large part. huh about a fastball? no. the play at the plate. he's out. the ball did not go far enough. brian roberts tried, and he is taken out. barajas got enough of it to keep it very close. good coverage made by romero with the tag on. in the dark. no peanuts or nothin'. and then if your bag wants to bring one of its little bag friends for company, they charge another $25. that's just plain mean. why do they hate your bags? at southwest airlines, bags fly free. grab your bag. it's on! ( ding )
8:08 pm
8:09 pm
>> gary: next friday we hope you'll bring the family and the friends to the ballpark. every friday is student night presented by at&t. all students of any age purchase a left field upper reserve seat for just $6 with a school i.d. 888-868-bird or orioles.com for information information. that's next friday. 2-0 lead. back-to-back home runs by wells and rios in the second inning. jason berken inside, lyle overbay leading it off. overbay grounded out his first time up. and that one will be outside. the orioles have won only 5-20 since the all-star break. it has been a tough skid. each of these teams coming in with two-game losing streaks to this three-game set.
8:10 pm
2-0 pitch. berken misses away again. 3-0. and that is a four-pitch walk. overbay is on. the first walk surrendered by berken. we talked about the starters at the top, and how important they are to how a team wins or doesn't win. buck, not many starter wins since the all-star break. >> buck: the orioles are 5-15, only four wins from the starters, guthrie, hernandez, bergesen and matusz. only one appease that's a real challenge for a team. you look at all of the front running ball clubs, they have starter whose pitch late and pick up the decisions. >> gary: a check swing. vernon wells, foul ball. wells delivered a home run his
8:11 pm
11th, the solo shot. wells with a .258 average. hay has overbay on at first base. and he launches that one the other way to right field. markakis will have room. the runner halfway. wells retired. one down. alex rios, his 13th home run came in the back-to-back situation in the second. he is now 3-3 in the times he has faced berken. .262 batting average for him. overbey with a short lead at first base, and a strike taken on the outside corner to riosment rios during the home stand, the two games against
8:12 pm
the yankees, he had a couple of hits in seven at-bats. breaking ball. he went around on it. the home plate umpire making the call, jim wolf, and a two strike count. >> buck: rementioned rios, and there is a report out that he has been claimed a team and the chicago white sox are rumored to be take team. we don't know whether that is valid or not, but the waiver process is ongoing. the teams can put as many as seven players on waivers a day. and general ramly the purpose of that is to get a gauge for the level of interest from other teams in your players and potentially you might set up an off-season trade, something like that. >> gary: overbay is off first, one away. good pitch. he had him fooled on that. so berken gets his second strikeout as rios goes down and
8:13 pm
there are two away. >> buck: this is a pretty good breaking ball. it is a curve ball down in a good spot to alex rios, the second strikeout. he gets the hand on top of it. the ball is in the dirt. it is -- he swung way out in important of him. >> dave: berken with a walk and a couple of strikeouts. he made his debut on the first day of august for the jays. in the deal coming from cincinnati. scott rolen, the primary player going the other way. he was hitting just .209 with the reds. he played in 43 games, five homers, 16 rbi's. he delivered a double in his first at-bat in this game. he takes the pitch up high for a ball. funny, the waiver wire we're talking about, it is 5:00 every day, the waiver wife wire is active and they come across and the teams have five or six people literally gathered looking to see who is on the
8:14 pm
waiver wire. the claims go from the teams with the worst record up, the right to claim. breaking ball is fouled back and a one ball, two strike count. >> buck: there are so many different kinds of waivers, but right now this is a situation take started on august 1 after the trade deadline when you have to have waivers until november 10. but you're right. they will be just assistants in the front office who are assigned to check out the waiver wire and make sure you don't overlook somebody who might be an asset to your organization. >> gary: one ball, two strike delivery on the way by berken. did he go? yes, he did. the crew chief makes the call. berken gets his third strikeout. he gets two of them in this inning. the lead-off walk left stranded. the blue jays have the lead, 2- 0. @@00@x@0@p@0@6p)@)@)p,÷pp@

8:16 pm
>> we're back in toronto where the blue jays are honoring the back-to-back wool championship teams of 1992 and 1993 t hall of famer dave winfield addressing the crowd here. earlier this evening i spoke to joe carter who played with the teams who hit the game-winning- game ending world series. and the teams had talent and what joe carter was telling me, it was more than talent. they had the mentality to win. there were times when dave winfield would bunt to get a runner over late in a game to get the winning run home or
8:17 pm
that joe carter would do the same and the guys like robby alomar and dave stewart, they all held each other very accountable to play the game right. i spoke with the manager dave trembley about what carter told me about how they would sacrafice their stats. trembley nodded his head and said that is the way the game is spootsed to be played. this 1992-1993 team was being introduced and you have to be wondering what they must have been thinking and admiring about a team that played well and right. now back upstairs to gary and buck. >> gary: and you would hope, what you hope they are thinking about is day, day. >> buck: yes that's actually why you play. those are the trophies for those two respective season, -- seasons, the world series trophy for 1992 and 1993. they had a great cast of characters, and they improved their organization to a point where dave winfield came here, dave stewart came here, rickey henderson, so it became
8:18 pm
attractive first and then you could draw the star players up to toronto. they turned it around. >> gary: yes. here is aubrey huff. and that is knocked down, and a couple of marks on your score card there. huff retired on a fine play, 3- 4-1. >> buck: you can see what a good athlete aaron hill is and ricky romero. he knows romero is going to be there in plenty of time. an easy play for romero. gop we've had some strange scorings in this game on the orioles' side. here is nolan reimold. he grounded out his first time up in the fourth inning ending the inning. brian roberts ends up with the caught stealing that goes 2-1 as he was then out at the plate trying to score on what he thought was going to be a wild pitch. now you get a 3-4-1 to start
8:19 pm
this inning. reimold takes the pitch outside for a ball. romero with a walk and three strikeouts. berken, a walk and two strikeouts the home runs are the difference, wells and rios, 2-3-0 for toronto and o's on the board for the o's. that up the middle. he caught it! oh, lordy! mercy! you don't want to be on the mound tonight! that is the third shot back to the mound in this game. >> buck: did i ever tell you what a good athlete ricky romero is? watch this. it is right back to his glove side. he ducks out of the way, sticks his glove up and catches it. i mean, that is a bullet. as quick as he turns it loose before he gets both feet on the ground it is coming right back at him. i don't know how they do it. i couldn't stand out there and
8:20 pm
have those guys hitting balls back at you, and think ear able to block it out of their mind. >> gary: blew. two down. how about those two plays? melvin mora, he has grounded out. 1-0 count on melvin. >> buck: the uniforms, they're paying homage to the great teams. obviously since then they have changed their entire logo and everything. >> gary: they look so natural, don't they? you're so used to seeing the uniforms, you wouldn't even think about it. >> buck: i forgot all about it. >> gary: a two ball, one strike count. romero the last nine games, seven wins, one loss, one no decision. he has won his last three.
8:21 pm
2-1 pitch on the way. way inside. and the count will go to 3-1. melvin trying to justify through his skipper dave trembley more playing time. .252 at the plate. only eight homers and 28 rbi's. the power numbers way down and the production numbers down. 3-1 delivery that's a base hit! and the orioles get their first base hit of the ballgame after the two powerful defensive plays. you have begun to think, ghee, maybe, but it is very early. there is a sing until the fifth. >> buck: we saw the same thing yesterday, no hits through the first four innings, ty wigginton broke it up in the fifth. this is a good pitch out over the plate, but it was a 3-1 count. mora could look for it and he extens up the middle. another shot up the middle. >> gary: this one is a two-out
8:22 pm
single in the fifth. here is ty wigginton who was called out on strikes his first time up so the orioles down by two in this ballgame as the pitchers look at back-to-back home runs. they have been in charge of the game. you have-speed delivery. they had him fooled. one ball and one strike. >> buck: he took a called third strike in his first at-bat. it was a curve ball that was down and in. he thought it was off the plate, but the replay shows it might have just caught the corner. >> gary: this is his third start. he had a no decision game july 11. three runs, seven hits over eight. he lost the start against berken in may when he pitched five and a third innings.
8:23 pm
1-2. wigginton takes it. >> buck: and he has to think about both sides of the plate obviously with two strikes. romero threw him that curve ball inside in his first at-bat and then he threw him a changeup away. >> gary: wigginton on a check swing went around. the cat and mouse is played and wigginton is tagged out. four strikeouts for romero. the orioles get their first hit of the game. romero helps his own cause. a line shot by nolan reimold that he hauled in. 2-0, jays. ÷pp@@
8:24 pm
go home runs, the blue jays have the lead. a good game to open this three-
8:25 pm
game set. and the orioles very much in it. >> buck: they are. the interesting thing is dave trembley has talked about offense. there are guys hitting the ball well, but they haven't been able to bunch any hits together. >> gary: the orioles are up against one of the best rookie pitchers in the game. if you look at the numbers, one of the best pitchers in the ballgame, romero showing a great dell of confidence in the way he goes after hitters. >> buck: yes. he is athletic. we have seen him make two great defensive plays, covering home plate and the comebacker to the mound. when you look around baseball, there are an awful lot of good young pitchers. and we all know how many pitchers we have here in baltimore, and ricky romero is quickly making a name for himself. >> gary: what that means is the other side of the ballgame really takes some extra effort. the orioles now as you get to the middle part of the game, has happened to detroit, has to think about how do we start to
8:26 pm
get something going on the base path? >> buck: yes, and you feel a little better with each particular at-bat you get with a starter. they will have a better feel about the break on his pitches, the seed on his changeup and the location of his fastball as they go through the lineup. so it is important to have good at-bats and really grind out against ricky romero. jason berken has settled down newsily after giving up back-to- back home runs. it is a -- we have a nice ballgame. >> gary: you have been in this ballpark as a manager, player. what do pan fans need to know either pitching or hitting? >> buck: the only guy i ever heard that didn't like hitting here was wade boggs. he just felt like he couldn't see the ball well in this ballpark. it is a great place to play, and the artificial surface allows the balls to get through the infield very quickly. >> gary: let's see if berken can continue to three strikes an get the outs that he is on a roll now. barajas popped out his first time out. inglett, the number nine hitter
8:27 pm
and scutaro at the top of the order will follow the catch tore the plate. berken with only one walk, and two k's in the game. the pitch is is a strike, movement down and away. barajas is just 1-3 off the orioles' 25-year-old right- hander. berken, and another good breaking ball that catches the outside corner. as we said for berken, it is not a must anything, -- anything, but it certainly is an opportunity to put yourself in the mix for the future for the orioles even if not as a starter. jammed him just missed the chalk down the line and the count goes to two balls and two strikes. >> gary: gary, you each had a chance to talk to all of these young pitchers, and they have so much confidence, and they believe they'll be able to turn it around. jason berken told me several times, i just feel like i need one good game. they're going to start to steamroll and everything will come together for him. >> gary: foul tipped. >> buck: that's what you hope
8:28 pm
for if you're rick kranitz and dave trembley that something is going to click for jason berken where he says oh, that's the feel of that pitch, or that's how i want to let that changeup go. now you have the opportunity. there's really nothing at san diego here other than the fact you're giving these youngsters a chance to pitch in the big leagues. not only do they see their own teammates pitching bu the verlanders and the halladays and that is a tremendous tool. >> gary: how things have changed, and trembley believes it is a change all around baseball. you used to believe i think as a fan and even as a player and manager when pitchers came up from the minor leagues, you expected them to be ready to pitch at the major league level. but hay had developed three or four seasons. the play is going to have to be made. wieters will lob it down there as a strikeout. but dave trembley says no more. there is not enough pitching depth around baseball for that to happen. now you look for guys who are
8:29 pm
mentally tough, who seem to be mature enough to hand the major league level and you bring them up and they're go diagnose learn as the major league level how to pitch. you're going to be instructing them while they're her and you're going to have to have great patience because they're not going to be major league pitchers when they get here. they're going to have to develop here. he say what is has to be done is educate the fan to understand that's where baseball is in this day and age, and i think he's right. if we just look around at all of the rookie pitcher whose have come up to major league baseball this year, that's what is lapping everywhere. >> buck: there used to be the adage in baseball that a pitcher matures at 28, 29s old because he doesn't come up until he is 26, 27 and get as couple of years under his belt. you remember the great left- hander warren spawn. there is a great story about sandy koufax about how long it took koufax to get command of his fastball and strike zone. it is a great point. it is our responsibility to
8:30 pm
tell that story. >> phil: fouled back. i think from the fan's -- fans' side of it, oriole fans as an example, you have waited so long to try to get a team to .500, to be competitive in this tough division and now to be told the rules have changed a little bit and you have to have more patience while you wait for young pitchers to develop that is hard that is asking a lot to support a ball club, to buy tickets, to watch the broadcast, whatever, but that's where it is. that's going to be a base hit. inglett, reimold going to second. here is the throw. good hustle. inglett get as double. >> theyer not that familiar with the artificial surface here. the ball had spin on it and it took nolan reimold out of his fielding positionment when reimold gets here, this ball is going to spin away from him and look at how it takes him, and
8:31 pm
that enables inglett to hustle into second base. >> gary: that is his decision on what to do because he has the play in important oh of him, so inglett gets the double in the fifth and here is scutaro at the top of the order. in the dirt. wieters will block it. four hits now, on the board for the jays. >> buck: to get back to your great point about the inexperienced pitchers here. here.(.ecl) that's why it is imperative that the orioles identify and sign some sort of veteran pitcher that can be a jack morris influence on this team. some guy that is going to an arm around the pipper that is not a coach, a player, that says i made the same types of mistakes early in my career and here is how you handle it. >> gary: they have said.
8:32 pm
what they are looking for is is a power veteran right-handed bat and a starting pitcher who is in that number one or two category. >> buck: and when you look at that group of pitchers who were here, you have david cohen and jack morris and key and they were all polished and they kind of coached themselves. >> gary: yes. the 2-0 count. the runner at second base. berken's deliver cry, scutaro, .296 with runners in scoring position on the season. he's got a chance right here. somewhat ironically scutaro has put up his best numbers on the road. a .346 hitter on the road, 100 points, actually 98 points less at home. 3-0 pitch. it is taken for a strike. and it goes to 3-1. hill, the number two hitter waiting on deck. here is the 3-live 3-2. >> k: when you go throug lineup the third time as a starting pitcher, you have to
8:33 pm
be able to change your patterns. in the minor leagues, these pitchers were able to go fastball, breaking ball, swing ataking balls out of the zeand all ofa sudden, hey, i got six, seven inning up here and i have talked to all of these youngsters about it. boy, guys don't swing at bad breaking balls. in the minor leagues, you make a mistake and you moot get away from it. every mistake up here is hit hard. >> steve: he is on. brad bergesen, espn for the lunch hour, noon until 1:00. friday, august 14, brian bass, wendy's at lakeside boulevard in owings mills from 11:00 to noon. for details go to oriolesreach.com. coming up this week. here is hill. he has grounded out twice in the game.
8:34 pm
berken takes that lefty right at -- oh, reimold, it went over his head! -ming in to score is inglett. the how will come in third. it will be a double for hill, and no one will feel worse about that than the guy out there in left field. >> buck: reimold came in a cull of steps and that bll took off. it takes off beyond its reach all the way to the wall. that is a tough one right there. berken sure could have used that out obviously, the second out of the inning, but hill ends up with a double and an rbi. so. >> gary: so the doubles keep piling up as we told you they would in this game. 22 doubles for hill. 77 rbi's. he is fifth in the league in rbi's. the infield is going to be drawn in, a 3-0 lead for the jays. adam lind flied out, grab grounded out. he takes the first pitch inside for a ball so lend now gets the
8:35 pm
rbi chance. .282 with runners in scoring position. berken with a -- as he said atough out not to be able to get. and the 1-0 delivery on the way. off-speed pitch is in there to lend for a strike. >> buck: often times, gary, we talk about defense picking up the pitcher. right now the pitcher would love to be able to pick up nolan reimold. a bop-up here, maybe a strikeout, just get out of this jam and strand these two base runners. lend, a very tough out and another off-speed pitch. he will foul it off. adam lind coming in, second in the american league, third in the majors in extra-base hits. he has 58 extra-base hits on the year, and he has had 19 in his last 25 games. >> buck: over the course of the four game ins detroit, dave trembley talked about his pitchers needing to pitch inside more and here is the perfect situation.
8:36 pm
you don't want lend to extend his arms over the plate. >> gary: here is the 1-2 delivery to him and he got him to reach and foul it away. >> buck: rbi guys in these situations you're thinking just about lifting a ball out to the outfield, at least the sac fly. a big part of the field. don't try to do too much. the infield is drawn in, and obviously berken would loe to get a ground ball at one of his infielders. >> gary: it almost has to be right at him because on this carpet, it does fly. here is the 1-2 delivery. swung on. there is the ground ball and the runner not going. roberts, good play brian roberts to get over there as jason berken did not, and his second baseman does. they have decided not to run scutaro on contact, and there are two down. >> phil: p. >> buck: generally in this situation you're in the third spot of your lineup, you to
8:37 pm
make sure the ball goes true. jason berken kind of throws on that play. the ball went past him and his responsibility is to get to first base on anything hit to the right side. watch his reaction. he throws the pitch and then kind of become as spectator. brian roberts picked up on it and he takes a very unusual 3-4 put out. >> gary: so the unusual put- outs continue in this game. fouled back and a big cut by overbay. the clean-up batter. he is 0-1. he grounded out. he has also drawn a walk. the runners still at second and third, but now there are two down. so a chance for berken to get out of this with only one run scoring here in the fifth inning, if he can get this out. and this obviously is a big at- bat in the game. overbay, .254 with runners in scoring position. he is down on the count, 0-2. >> buck: a good pitch there had overbay late on that high fastball. this will be a big boost here
8:38 pm
for berken and his teammates, and just minimize the damage. >> gary: he has lost nine consecutive decisions. swungen and missed atremendous job by jason berken. only one run scores acouple of hits, two are left in scoring position. the jays add to their lead 3-0. and i use the wish list to put any extra money aside for anything i want. being in control of my money feels good. introducing the virtual wallet from pnc, a high-definition, online view of your money. pnc. leading the way.
8:39 pm
boss: come on in, i had some other things you can tell people about geico - great claims service and a 97% customer satisfaction rate. show people really trust us. gecko: yeah right, that makes sense. boss: trust is key when talking about geico. you gotta feel it. why don't you and i practice that with a little exercise where i fall backwards and you catch me. gecko: uh no sir, honestly... uh...i don't think...uh... boss: no, no. we can do this. gecko: oh dear. vo: geico. fifteen minutes could save you 15% or more on car insurance. >> gary: the freeze cam brought
8:40 pm
to you by frost brewed cooer's light, the world's most refreshing beer. >> buck: know ran reimold hit as bullet and it ends up in the glove of ricky romero. great reaction. he gets his glove up. more self defense than anything, but he takes away a hit from nolan reimold. we have seen romero politic a couple great defensive plays here tonight. >> gary: three hard hit balls, berken has had two of them and romero that one nolan reimold, nick markakis, sitting beside one another there talking outfield duties between innings. >> buck: and obviously when these young players don't have a lot of experience in a particular ballpark, you're going to have some adjustments, and he is getting the chance to talk to nick markakis about it, and i'm sure a nick came over and said, hey, just keep battling through that. that ball is going the take off
8:41 pm

there is the speed to score. and the orioles add another. so ty wigginton with a big two- out hit, and it is a 6-3 ballgame on the orioles' eighth hit. >> buck: what strikeouts? just like that one swing of the bat and everybody forgets about the three k's. boy thrashings is a big hit. you get pie on second base, on moving the runner, and he comes around to score. a lili insurance, and the orioles have more breathing room. >> gary: so lee is not having a lot of luck as he has given up three singles here in the inning, a couple of runs have scored. he has lost his last four decisions that he has pitched to, lee. the averages are starting to
9:31 pm
climb up against him. 0-1 delivery. wieters will take it outside. one ball, one strike count. matt drew a walk and scored leading off the sixth inning. he has picked up a single and he has flied out to right field. and leeway inside. barajas again having to stop that. >> buck: ty wigginton had great reaction on the ball in the dirt. his first move once he saw the ball low in the dirt was to break towards second. and then he saw barajas block the ball and he had to retreat
9:32 pm
quickly. but as a base runner, especially after you have seen lee bounce a couple, you anticipate a ball in the dirt. that is going to be in the gap. of course, they will have a chance here. john shelby is going the wave him home. here the three coming into the cut-off man. wet wuertz a double and an rbi. and the orioles extend the lead to 7-3. and matt wieters has hit the ball hard. >> buck: the first time he has hit from the left side tnt and
9:33 pm
he hit a bullet. ty wigginton, he scores all the way from third base. this pitch is down, anybody borderline low, and he drills it. anytime you can get one past vernon wells, you hit it hard and he gets it all the way to the wall and wieters has knocked brandon lee right out of this game. >> gary: so matt wet wuertz a two-hit ballgame on at second base. the orioles have the 7-3 lead. brandon lee -- >> buck: maybe he hasn't knocked him out of the game. it looks like he is getting a little bit of a lecture from the skipper. >> gary: yes. >> gary: lecture first and then the change. stay here for a minute, i have something to say. so cito gaston will make the
9:34 pm
change. the 30,795 not particularly happy with what's going on here, and the jay also go deeper into their pen. the o's up by four. >> gary: you can keep up with your favorite orioles news on your networking. facebook/orioles or you can go to twitter.com/birdland insider. you can learn communications. birdland news is just a click away. b.m.w. he is trying to get out of this eighth inning situation. brandon lee threw two pitches and got two outs. he has the first bater in the eighth and after that there were bullets hit around the ballpark. >> gary: so he will come on with with a runner on second base. izturis to face him. he wants the signs again. izturis will take the first pitch up high for a ball. the o's try to win their first game of the season in toronto and end their two-game losing streak that is taken away for a ball and the count goes to 2-0.
9:35 pm
a game in which ricky romero was in charge through the first five innings. he gave up one hit. and then the orioles went to work. 2-0 delivery fouled away by izturis. acardo. izturis is taking a look at acardo. he has not faced him before. wieters, they're not holding him at second at all. fouled away again. >> buck: we had talked about the boston -- the -- the boston-
9:36 pm
yankee game at yankee stadium. there have only been five hits in the entire game and the yankees have four against beckett. the red sox have just one against a.j. burnett. >> gary: just amazing how that series is going on the year. 2-2 -- 2-2 delivery. izturis is inside to him. three balls and two strikes. meanwhile, tampa bay continues to hope that those two teams will continue to beat up on each other and give tampa bay a chance to try to move up. they are six games out. they have won three in a row. the red sox have lost three in a row and the yankees have won four in a row coming into today's play.
9:37 pm
and izturis will take it and he is on for a walk. he surrendered the free pass. that will bring brian roberts up, first and second and two down. roberts has a couple of walks in the ballgame tonight. he got one against romero, one against carlson. he is oh-fer two officially having flied out twice. brian has hit in nine of the last 11 games that -- if you include this one at about a .320 clip. and his pitch is in there for a strike. >> buck: a four-run sixth and a three-run eighth so far. >> buck: it has been one thing that the orioles haven't been able to do a lot of, put up a lot of crooked numbers.
9:38 pm
roberts will take that one outside. brian has not had a lot of success against the toronto pitcher this is season, .231. even with that average and without a home run against them this year, he has six rbi's against the jays. he has a chance for more here with two on. 1-1 delivery on the way. he strikes the strike. we thought that might have been away. >> buck: he seems to have a surprise reaction that he call this is a fastball away for a strike, that the strike zone really hasn't been much of an issue early on. ty wickington had the called strike three from ricky romero, not ricky ricardo. >> gary: here is lucy. here is the 1-2 delivery. way inside and the two wall
9:39 pm
ball, two strike count. i was going to say that. >> buck: i knew that. >> at least five times during the game. i waited until he was out of the game. >> gary: i wanted to say ricky ricardo. i was right there. two ball, two strike count object roberts. the runners on first and second. way outside and the count goes full 3-2. to say the least, the fans of the jays are not particularly happy with the developments of this game. >> buck: no. and this season, i think cito gaston had higher expectations to his pitching staff. a number of injuries to their
9:40 pm
starters. it had a domino effect on their bullpen and now they have lost a couple of their relief pitchers. >> gary: roberts pops it up on the 3-2 delivery. not enough room as that will end up behind the screen and stay at 3-2. toronto comes in, e.r.a.wise fifth in the league overall in earned run average. but it has been a sliding slope. as the season has gone along, the numbers have gone up. ricardo, 3-2 for a second time coming up to roberts. and walked him. this will cause you to tear your hair out. ricardo comes out of the bullpen with two dunn and loads the bases, walks the first two
9:41 pm
he faces. he has had three walks in the game now. wieters had a double. roberts got the walk. he is at first. 1-4. and he will take the pitch down low for a ball. >> buck: the orioles have hit three grand slams this year, markakis, mora and luke scott. >> gary: 1-0 delivery to him, outside and he falls behind 2- 0. >> buck: he is not even close with his fastball. he has a good arm, 93, 94 miles per hour fastball and right now adam jones has the luxury of sitting on fastballs discounting any concern about a breaking ball or a splitter. the bases are loaded. he has had nine bases loaded
9:42 pm
rbi's. and jones will take the strike and it goes to 2-1 and the fans with a cheer. >> buck: they got a good look at the 1992, 1993 world champs and you compare this edition of the blue jays and it can be discouraging. >> gary: 2-1 delivery. 2-2. two ball, two strike count and jones fouls it away. adam keeps it alive here. the orioles have already put up three in the eighth inning and take the 7-3 lead in the
9:43 pm
ballgame. adam jones trying to all but close that barn door. wieters, izturis and roberts, the base runners. here is the 2-2 delivery. jones again, fights it off. >> buck: another fastball, and a little late. 91 on the last fastball. but it is so difficult for a pitcher when you have eliminated any concerns in the hitter's mind of breaking ball. >> gary: a lot of people out there in the field. he takes to the second. fine stop hill and will get the
9:44 pm
out. but the orioles bat around in the eighth inning. they put up a three spot and extend their lead to 7-3 going to the bottom of the eighth. >> our mercedes benz. class assist of the game. >> buck: mora, bottom of the seventh inning, a h 4-3 game and swinging on rod barajas. mora, bare handed, throw on the money, the first out of the inning, big out. you get the number eight hitter out to start the inning and that was the first batter matt albers faced in that 4-3
9:45 pm
situation. >> gary: felix pie will stay in the ballgame. he is in left field as he ran for reimold. and scored. here is aaron hill. matt albers with a strikeout. he retired the side in order in the seventh. jason berken a chance to end his nine-game losing streak and get his second win of the season. he fitched a quality sixth. most importantly, after that second inning, back-to-back home run affair, he did not let it end his ballgame, and settled in and gave up only one more in the fifth on a couple of doubles. hill had the rbi in that inning with his two bagger. he came inside on him, one ball, two strike count. >> buck: albers has very good sinking fastball tonight. that ball really handcuffed aaron hill. matt retired all three batters he's faced. he came on with the ground
9:46 pm
ball. a great play by particularra, on barajas, joe inglett hit a ground ball out to brian roberts and then matt albers struck out marco scutaro looking. >> gary: hid had an oh-fer eight before getting that double in the fifth inning. the average now at .290. -- albers will pitch inside. the cardinal sin now for any orioles pitcher is to surrender a walk with a 7-3 lead in the bottom of the eighth. two ball, two strike count on hill. he fights that one off into the seats. >> buck: that swing right there just shows you how tough matt
9:47 pm
albers can be when he gets on top of that sinker and back here hill, extraordinary effort to get to the ball inside. he has to open up the swing, draw his hands in, and he can't really square it up. >> gary: here is the 2-2 delivery. laced to left. that is a base hit. so hill gets on with a lead-off single here in the eighth inning. it is the second time they have had the lead-off man, only the second time in eight. >> buck: and you can see matt albers' reaction. it wasn't the pitch he wanted. it kind of stayed up where hill could extend his arms and get the barrel on the ball. that will bring up lend. he is oh-fer three. the designated hitter in the ballgame batting third with overbay on deck. lend came in with a three-game hit streak.
9:48 pm
he has now gone 6 for his last 16, including the oh-fer three in this one. check swing and a strike on the outside corner from albers. one ball, one strike count. chris ray in the bullpen. >> buck: chris ray pitched on tuesday and had an exceptional outing. he was in relief of brian matusz. >> gary: he falls behind on that, two balls and one strike. hill at first base and just barely off the bag. the 2-1 delivery, the breaking ball and tapped foul. that will even the count up at
9:49 pm
two balls and two strikes. the orioles' struggles on the road with only the 17 wins, only one team, washington, has fewer wins on the road, 14. the orioles are tied for second fewest road wins. the orioles have 17. pittsburgh has got 17, and san diego has got 17. we noted in the detroit series, the orioles numbers have picked up on the road, both e.r.a. and averagewise. it is not hit very hard. roberts will go for one and get the lead runner. >> buck: that is a big out. it keeps the double play in
9:50 pm
order and aaron hill will have to slow up and let the ball pass him. when roberts -- roberts saw that, he saw he had plenty of time. >> gary: a good play by brian to get the lead. lyle overbay with one away and a runner on at first. toronto has had major struggles against the east, understandably so, convenient more so than the orioles. the orioles have 14 wins against their eastern division oh pockets. toronto has only 12. nay do not have the jays, a
9:51 pm
winning record against any of the eastern division team this is year. albert, a 1-0 count. overbay, oh-fer two off of albers. you saw the orioles' decision, wigginton moving back at first base with a four-run lead and a left-hander up there. you just -- lend is probably not going to go anywhere anyway and you want to cut down on that hole to the left-hander on a ground ball between first and second. wigginton will stay just close enough to keep lend from just taking off. the pitch is going to be down
9:52 pm
low. two ball, one strike count. >> buck: you back him up when the pitch is being delivered so he can increase his lateral range and hopefully should overbay pull the ball to first base, he'll have a chance to knock it down. he'll stay right there. there you see he is backing up. >> gary: albers is not happy with that pitch either. >> buck: no. the middle of the disorder has some pop. >> gary: the runner goes. 3-1. called strike. no throw made. they will call it a defense indifference, no stoaten base.
9:53 pm
three ball, two strike count, one away. he removes the double play opportunity. overbay with an oh-fer two and a walk and is on with a walk. albers surrenders the free pass and vernon wells is coming up and dave trembley coming out. >> buck: obviously with wells and rios coming up, you don't want to encourage them with the walks, and that's what has happened here. chris ray comes on, and he was great on tuesday. >> gary: ray has -- he has a couple of solid outings. let's see how he does here when we come back. >> buck: in detroit, he allowed a walk, a hit and a strikeout,
9:54 pm
and a very good seventh inning, a one, two, three seventh inning, polanco, ordonez and cabrera went down on three ground ball outs. >> gary: chris was reinstated off the d.l. ton 31st of july. he works here with two on and vernon wells up and only one out. and the pitch will be taken for a strike. ray has pitched against the jays this season in two previous games working three innings giving up three runs on four hits in those games. that is a strike on the outside corner. quickly 07-2 to wells. >> buck: that is exactly what
9:55 pm
you want to do in this situation is pitch aggressively, get ahead, put vernon wells in the hole. >> gary: wells with a home run in the second inning his 11th, 1-3 in the game. ray came at him and that's a base hit in the gap. lend will come around to score. pie's throw is going to m come to third, not in time and worst yet, by not going to the right base, the runner goes to second. >> buck: that is a bad play. you have to know what the score is and what the situation is. if you have to throw take ball to second base the keep the
9:56 pm
double play in order. now he enables vernon wells to get to second a breaking ball up in the zone, not a good pitch, 0-2, vernon wells hits it to the gap. but look at pie. this runner going to third doesn't mean a thing. you eve got to throw it to second. brian roberts is standing at the back at second with his arms in the airwaving throw it to me! throw it to me! that's the one thing you always think of, keep the double play in order. >> gary: the knock object pie has been both with chicago and his orioles, that his sense of
9:57 pm
the game isn't there. >> buck: there is brian roberts as he is calling for the ball. >> gary: the ball in the air, down the line. markakis avery long run and diving and markakis make as great play! the throw will come to the plate. it will not be in time. a run will score on a sac fly. a good head's up base running by overbay. what r. but what a play by markakis as he makes a diving catch! 7-5 game. >> buck: terrific concentration. it is going to be very close to hitting the turf here. it is in fair territory and the three to the plate not in time, but what a big out. great concentration by markakis. remember, you're thinking about cutting off balls in the gap, and then to get that little flare down the right-field line, he made a fine catch.
9:58 pm
now a runner on at second base, the potential tying run in the ballgame is at the plate. rbi by wells in the inning and one by rios, so both have two rbi ballgames. rios is now up to 60 on the season and wells up to 44. and chris ray will look for the final out here without allowing that other run, wells, to score. and the pitch is a strike. and encarnacion has doubled, 1- 3 in the ballgame. melvin mora, charging, and another good play to get the out. so ray comes on, finds the outs, the two run also be charged to albers. two run0sen a couple of hits, and it is now a 7-5 o's lead. @ú
9:59 pm
>> gary: orioles baseball on masn is brought to you by southwest airlines. book your next trip at southwest.comment and by budweiser. reach for the perfect combination of flay very and refreshment. budweiser, the great american lagger. gary thorne, buck martinez. the orioles try to put one away, but this one is far from overwhelm. shawn camp has come on to do the pitching now for ac cardo coming up getting the final out in that last inning. 36th time out with an 0-5 mark. not a bad e.r.a. fewer hits than innings pitched. >> buck: how big was the three- run inning in the top of the eighth for the orioles? >> gary: enormously important
10:00 pm
difference in the game. nick markakis officially is oh- fer four. he does have an rbi, a 1-0 count. camp's delivery to him will be fouled back. camp, a 3.14 e.r.a. as you saw in the 37th game. opponents hitting .237 off of him. left-handers .225. 1-1 thereiny -- delivery inside. two ball, one strike current on markakis. >> buck: and the problem for cito gaston's blue jays, this is the fifth pitcher who pitched tonight. ricky romero got off to such a great start, as we told you, the third time through the order was really a problem for him as he gave up a four spot
10:01 pm
on three hits in the fifth inning. >> gary: brandon lee was charged with three runs on four hits in one inning. 3-1 delivery on the way. markakis takes it outside and he's on with a walk. wow. another lead-off walk. let's take a look at your voting so far for the at&t player of the game. the update now, on top, jason berken rebounded in this start. that could be the winning pitcher. nick markakis and aubrey huff. you can text in your vote to 51862. the results coming up in the "o's xtra" post-game show. the lead-off man on again, and aubrey huff, did he go? check third. no.
10:02 pm
a very short lead and that is going to be a foul ball. huff with a two-hit ballgame. huff with a single and two rbi's. he could have had another but a fine play in the fifth inning. overbay knocked it down, deflected it to hill and hill made the play to the pitcher covering to deny another base hit to aubrey huff. one ball, one strike count. , and that is on the outside corner for a strike. aubrey now has had 27 multihit games on the season. one four-hit ballgame. if he could get another one in this one, it would be his third three-hit game. breaking ball right there. that one had some late movement
10:03 pm
on it and camp will get a strikeout. one down. >> buck: back door breaking ball froze huff at the plate. the 1-2 pitch. the target is on the outside corner, and camp delivers, well, just caught the outside corner. >> gary: felix pie will stand in. one down and one on. pie getting his first at-bat hitting .240, a couple f homers, 11 rbi's. pie up to 129 at-bats now, in the air, center field. vernon wells puts that away and two down. so markakis with the lead-off walk still on first base. the orioles have had three led- off walks in this ballgame tonight, and they have scored
10:04 pm
so far once. in those innings. two away. melvin mora a1-4 ballgame, a single. mora here at the rogers centre, .235 life-time hitter. he has had eight career home runs in this ballpark. >> buck: melvin has had a big night defensively. we talked about his fine play to start off the seventh inning on a swinging bunt off the bat of rod barajas. that is two quick outs for matt albers in the seventh. he would have a one, two, three seventh. >> gary: markakis off first. 1-0 delivery. slider will miss outside. that ice cream cup looks like it is going to envelop melvin mora. rarely would i notice ice cream cupped or anything like that.
10:05 pm
>> buck: that time of the night, a little dessert. >> gary: yeah! what what a comment that was. 2-0, the-outs. that just catches the outside corner and it will go to 2-1 on melvin. jim johnson is watching, staying loose here is the 2-1 delivery on the way. melvin will foul that one off. the orioles trying to add to it here. if it stay this is way, it will be a save situation for jim johnson who has taken over that role from george sherrill. two ball, two strike count
10:06 pm
markakis up first. mora will pop that one up. second base. the play by hill. we go to the bottom half of the ninth inning. jim johnson will come on. a save situation. the orioles are three outs away from a win. you do get a hint of drinkability right away.
10:07 pm
does my pen have write-ability? come on people, we gotta focus. we're not leaving until we've met our budget. we need ideas. we could cut back on marketing. we could eliminate bonuses. how about we stop buying bud light for every meeting? [ sfx: glass crashing, man screaming ] it's the only beer with just the right taste. bud light. the difference is drinkability. it was a joke! >> we're getting set for "o's xtra" postgame. the orioles have a 7-5 lead. the new closer jim johnson comes on for his first save chance since george sherrill was traded. >> he has a chance to really help jason johnson win his second game of the season. the orioles were down three early and stormed back with seven runs. there are a lot of highlights for you tonight. >> so 7-5 lead and let's head back to the exciting conclusion
10:08 pm
and rejoinen gary thorne and buck martinez. >> gary: thank you very much, jim, rick. and a good ballgame. the orioles try to pick up the win here and jim johnson in his new role as the closer will try to put it away. >> buck: he's had five save opportunities and recorded two saves this one will be a big one. jim johnson is very confident that he can do this job. h he is well equipped with it with the pitch selection. he has the ability to get it down. this is is a four-seam fastball. he throw this is one a little harder than the two-seam fastball. the curve ball, that is his changeup grip, and he threes it down in the zone. and there is the curve ball grip that he gets that long seam with his middle finger, and he imparts all of that great rotation. >> gary: he goes to work and get as chop tore short. rod barajas is retired. one pitch and one out. we love that as closer.
10:09 pm
chris ray, 2/3 of an inning. matt albers, a walk, a strikeout and an inning and a third. berken, he could be the winner. three runs, five hits over six. the orioles trying to hand ricky romero just his fifth loss of the yore and the second against the orioles, the starter for the jays. >> buck: this will be the first win for the orioles in this ballpark. >> gary: yes. >> buck: this year that is a big one, the first win of a three-game series. >> gary: here is inglett. he will take the pitch down low. jim johnson's last save came against kansas city on july 29. here is the 1-0 delivery. johnson this season against the jays. this is the fifth game he has appeared in. he has worked five previous innings giving up one run, three hits, with a couple of walks and three strikeouts against the jays.
10:10 pm
brian roberts, can he do it? a long throw and not in time. great effort, but inglett with his second hit is on with one away. >> buck: brian roberts made a good play on inglett in the seventh inning, a ball hit in the same area, but there time you could see how he has to extend. it cost him a couple of extra steps there and that enables him to beat it out. joelingette runs very well and watch how brian roberts is on the left field side of second when he makes the throw. >> gary: so jay also get the potential tying run to the plate here in the bottom of the ninth inning that is their eighth hit. the top of the order, marco scutaro a couple of strikeouts, fly ball out and a walk. taking the first pitch as he does most of the time. it is inside for a ball.
10:11 pm
so now you're back to three of the toughest outs in the league, scutaro, hill and lend. the orioles have held them down for the most part tonight. hill has an rbi double. and a single. he's on deck. scutaro can do things like that when you're getting the two- strike hits that betalked about earlier, but he has done so well this year. he can take the count deep, force the pitcher to throw extra pitches, and be confident you can hit. >> buck: they also understand he represents the seventh blue jay run, and his job is to get on base. however he can get on. he takes the walk, force jim johnson into a deeper count,
10:12 pm
and get on board a-- on board in front of aaron hill. >> gary: in the dirt. mat wieters stops it. 2-1. >> buck: it is going to be to the catcher's right so you shift over there and make sure you block it and don't allow the base runner to move from first and second. >> gary: here is the 2-1 delivery on the way. scutaro will foul it back, 2-2. the goirls had to make a comeback in this ballgame after they trailed 3-0. they got four run on three hits. it should have been one more hit, but markakis' shot was called an error. so there are two unearned runs
10:13 pm
on the board. and then the orioles added to it in the eighth with three runs on four hits. scutaro will take that one to right field and nick markakis is there. the runner halfway will go back, and there are two down. >> buck: there have been some fib defensive plays by the orioles together, markakis making a sliding catch on alex rios in the eighth inning. melvin mora coming over to talk to jim johnson. two down, inglett on. the bottom of the first inning and the orioles up by two. hill, a double, a single, 2-4. and the fifth leading rbi man in the league. down to third and foul.

10:16 pm
>> hi, everybody. it is "o's xtra" presented by verizon fios. the o's are able to get the opener of this three-game series. winning by a final of 7-5 over toronto. it was a come-from-behind win. huh about that, berken has two wins in the big leagues. and both against toronto. >> he went in with a 3.38 e.r.a. and finally pulls out a second win. nine consecutive losses. he finally broke that don't. he didn't get into double figures. that is a good thing. a very good effort. very, very tough after he gave up two home runs in that second inning back-to-back. he really beared down and ended up having a good game. >> toronto built a 3-0 lead, but the orioles would come back. bases loaded, one out in the sixth. nick markakis hits a shot. it goes off the glove of lyle overbay. two runs score.
10:17 pm
they rule this an error. it looks like a base hit to me, but the orioles got the runs. >> and lyle overbay, known as a very good defensive first baseman gets that ball call. he says he should have made it and it went for an error. >> aubrey huff bloop this is line drive in front of wells. jones will score. 3-3. >> the orioles are piecing it together, down three and they rally to put four runs on the board. aubrey huff with a big hit for the o's. >> here is nolan reimold. here is why you hustle. they can't turn the double play. a run scores and that gives the orioles the lead. >> one thing you can never accuse this man of doing is not hustling. this is what gives the orioles the lead in the ballgame and they never look back. >> a 6-3 game in the eighth, and matt wieters, he went down and got that ball. he hits it all the way to the gap and that gives the orioles the 7-3 lead. >> wieters, two hits on the night catches this fastball down and in and an inside out to the gap in center field. that puts another run on the

10:22 pm
and that's what he did. >> everybody wants to contribute and he was tired of looking at that 1-9 record. boy nthe fifth inning, he did a nice job. joe inglett makes a base hit down the left-field line. the ball took a funny hop on nolan reimold. that started the inning. and then aaron hill is at the plate with a couple aboard and he hit as ball that looks like it could have been an out. one run comes in to score. now it is second and third with one out. the infield is drawn in and he get as key out here, an unusual 3-4 put out. but that was the second out of the inning and then he get as big strikeout to strikeout lyle overbay to end that fifth inning that was a big step. then the sixth inning. he comes rite back and has a very good inning with couple of strikeouts. he december a good job of having a one, two, three sixth inning and taking advantage of the good defense. that was a very huge point. the fifth inning to get out and strand those two runners and have a one, two, three sixth inning. these are the thins you're
